Skeletal Muscles

The great range and variety of functions served by skeletal muscles can be suggested by naming just four: the diaphragm, used in breathing; the muscles that make the eye wink; the deltoid muscle that gives the shoulder its shape; and the tongue.

Skin, Hair and Nails

Perhaps no other organ of the human body receives so much attention both from its owner and the eyes of others as the skin and its associated structures - hair and nails.

The Brain - Cerebrum

What we usually mean by "brain" is that part of the brain called the cerebrum. It is the cerebrum that permits us all our distinctly human activities - thinking, speaking, reading, writing.

Accidents

All children have accidents and injure themselves.

Phobias

If fears are often legitimate and usually outgrown through reassuring experiences, phobias are deep-seated unconquerable fears.

Imagine working in a world where time seems to just past by and where almost everything changes instantly. Think of having to keep up with an environment where it costs a lot to stop or even slow down for a while. Sound taxing, right? What more of prioritizing the welfare of everybody in the household on top of it all.

But every head of the family doesn’t mind about it. Fathers are said to be the pillars of our homes. They toil sun up to sun down to give our needs and desires.

Some of them go abroad with tears in their eyes because they will be physically separated from their families. However, there is a certain joy in their hearts knowing that they will be able to provide for their loved ones back home.

To honor these gallant paternal men and let them feel how extraordinary they are and important their sacrifices are for their families, Father’s Day has been a yearly universal event. As we mark again this special occasion on Sunday, June 18, 2017, our applause and recognition will never be enough to show them how grateful we are to have them in our lives.

Our dads, together with our moms, take good care of us the moment we’re born. They are the ones who provide everything we need for our everyday lives. From infancy up to adulthood, they feed and clothe us.

As we take our initial baby steps, our patriarchs guide and lead us in the right direction. When we stumble and fall, they assist us to rise and move on. In times of danger or any threat, they shield us from any harm.

All of these, they do out of unconditional love. Their selflessness, though, has its own toll. Working tirelessly could lead to high levels of stress constantly and problems not only mentally, but physically, too. So better watch out for the signs.

Has tatay been constantly complaining about losing strands and strands of his hair every day? Or maybe has he been searching for a way on how to get them to grow back?

Different Types of Cancer that Women Suffer from #HealthZone

Cancer is a disease, which, if not checked at the very beginning, can be fatal in many cases. Basically cancer means a disease in which the cells of a human body grow beyond control. Cancer, as a rule is named after that part of a human body from where it originates. There are certain cancers which affect specific female body parts, and thus are named after them such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. All these cancers are bad for women health. In most cases, however, there are some lifestyle changes that can help women to protect themselves from, or at least lower the risks of cancer. In order to protect women health from the attack of cancer, it is important that a person is well informed about this disease. Thus here are some important information about some specific cancers, which affect women.

Ovarian Cancer

In the pelvis region of a woman, two ovaries are located on each sides of the uterus. The purpose of the ovaries is to produce eggs and make female hormones. These organs are susceptible to the risks of cancer. In fact there are more chances of a woman suffering from ovarian cancer, than that of any other female reproductive organ.

• There are a number of signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, such as vaginal bleeding or abnormal discharges from vagina, back pain, pain in the abdomen region, bloating and some other symptoms. However, even if someone has these symptoms, it may not mean that they have ovarian cancer, it just means that she should immediately consult a doctor.

• There are a number of treatments for ovarian cancer, such as

1. Surgery- For ovarian cancer, surgery is a good option, since the tissues that contain cancer can be removed through surgery.

2. Chemotherapy- Cancer at a specific stage can be eliminated with the use of chemotherapy. In this process, special medicines are used to shrink or kill the cancer cells.

3. Radiation- Through high energy ray, cancer is killed.

Thus ovarian cancer can be removed, if it is diagnosed at an early stage. If someone has the signs mentioned above, they should ideally listen to her body and see a doctor, and just do not regret later.

Breast cancer

Another risk for women health is the breast cancer. Some specialists are of the opinion that, a woman who has a high generic life can be victims of breast cancer. The most important points that can lead to this type of cancer are the age of initiation of menstruation. But there are certain options they can choose.

• If a person has chances of cancer, they can make a few lifestyle changes in order to lessen the chances. For example controlling the weight is one of the easiest way of reducing the chances of breast cancer. Other healthy choices that one can make are quitting drinking and smoking. Staying away from hormone therapy can also reduce the risks of breast cancer.

• For breast cancer too there are a number of treatments available, especially at the early stage, when the risk of the breast cancer is low. According to some of the studies, if the lump with cancer can be removed from the breast instead of removing the breast itself, and then treating the area with radiation can completely cure early stage breast cancer. However, if a woman undergoes a more intensive treatment, the chances are that the woman will live longer, but there can be other complications, like shrinking of the breast.

Thus it is important that no woman should ignore the symptoms of a possible breast cancer, and report to a doctor at the earliest stage.

Cervical cancer

The lower part of the uterus is known as the cervix. This is where the baby grows during a pregnancy. A woman can have cancer in that region of her body, and when she does, it can get very difficult to cure. It is important to find and treat the abnormal cells inside a cervix and treat it before things can go really wrong. In order to prevent cervical cancer it is important to have regular women health checkup, because early detection of this disease can lead to its cure.

• There are two types of tests that can help detect cervical cancer, one is the pap test, or pap smear test and another is the HPV test. In both the cases cells are collected from the cervix, and tested. For pap smear test, the idea is to test if there are is some abnormal cell growth. Whereas the HPV test is a test in which the HPV infection is checked. If the report is positive, then biopsy test becomes important.

• It is generally seen that women over the age of 30 have a greater risk of getting the cervical cancer. This disease can be passed on through sexual relationship, therefore, it is better that one practices safe sex.

• In the case of cervical cancer treatment, especially at the stages 1b and 2a, there are a number of options such as

1. Chemotherapy and radiation applied at the same time in the affected cells.

2. Chemotherapy, after removing of lymph nodes of the pelvic region, after using radical hysterectomy.

3. There is another treatment called radical trachelectomy.

4. Use of chemotherapy before a surgery.

It is important that a woman includes the cervical cancer tests in the routine health check up. In case of these types of cancer, prevention is always a better option, and maintaining some basic rules can actually be beneficial for the prevention.

These are some of the well known cancers that can affect a woman. In order to have a lower risk of these diseases, one needs to follow a healthy lifestyle, and get themselves checked from time to time. Even then one might get cancer, but, if a woman follows a regular routine and have health checkups, she will have a better chance of surviving the cancer.

Herbalife Health Poll: 9 in 10 Filipinos ”highly concerned” about the potential diseases that an unhealthy lifestyle can cause #HealthZone #Herbalife

MANILA, Philippines - Nine in 10 Filipino consumers surveyed by global nutrition company Herbalife are “highly concerned” about the potential diseases that an unhealthy lifestyle can cause them, with the same number believing that simple lifestyle changes can help improve their overall well-being.

A good number of the respondents expressed willingness to adopt a healthy lifestyle; 79 percent said that they would cut down on unhealthy foods, 78 percent expressed their willingness to exercise more regularly, and 72 percent said they would make better nutrition choices.

“We welcome the results of the survey. It gives an understanding of Filipinos becoming even more health concious and self-aware that they need to make some lifestyle changes to improve their overall well-being. It also gives Herbalife an idea where we are needed, because as the survey revealed only four out of 10 would spend 10 to 30 minutes a day to make simple lifestyle changes,” said Rosalio Valenzuela, Herbalife Philippines General Manager.

The respondents, however, cited the following as the top obstacles to achieving a healthy lifestyle: lack of time for exercise (75 percent), lack of time to make proper nutrition choices (64 percent), and high cost of healthy food (62 percent).

The same health poll likewise showed that the top three aging-related concerns in the country were heart, brain, and eye health.

Better knowledge and understanding

“The findings from the Herbalife survey clearly show that the majority of people in Asia Pacific that we questioned believe in the value of good nutrition and exercise as contributing to their overall well-being. We aim to play a greater role in providing practical tips and information to people to help them understand that the journey to a healthier, more active lifestyle is not difficult to achieve. With as little as 10 minutes a day, consumers can take positive steps to improve their nutrition and be more active, which will improve their overall well-being,” said William M. Rahn, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Herbalife Asia Pacific.

Herbalife conducted the survey in September 2015 in the lead-up to its Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour. It surveyed 1,200 respondents across six countries, including the Philippines, on perceptions towards their health and current lifestyle. Respondents from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Thailand were likewise included in the survey.

Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour

Now on its fourth year, the Herbalife Asia-Pacific Wellness Tour aims to deepen people’s practical understanding of the various aspects of living a healthy active lifestyle. Its previous tours in the past three years saw close to 60,000 participants across the region.

This year’s Wellness Tour will feature five members of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board (NAB) visiting 14 markets and 21 cities across the Asia-Pacific in the month of October. They will share their expert views on how people can make use of the little time they have to make simple lifestyle changes that will enhance their well-being.

Herbalife’s NAB experts will likewise share their views on a wide range of health-related topics, including weight management, brain health and aging; heart health; immunology; and skin care at the medical symposia being held in Australia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnamn.

The Herbalife NAB experts participating in this year’s Wellness Tour include Dr. David Heber, who incidentally will be coming to Manila, is a leading expert in the field of nutrition and named as one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” by Thomson Reuters in 2014 and considered one of “The Best Doctors in America”; Dr. Lou Ignarro, a Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine in 1998 for his discovery of nitric oxide’s health benefits; Dr. Gary Small, a specialist in brain health and aging who has authored over 500 scientific works and has received numerous awards and honors, including the “Senior Investigator Award” from the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry; Dr. Marion Fltechner-Mors, a health nutrition specialist who is currently heading the nutrition and obesity research group at Ulm University, Germany; and Dr. Wang Jae Lee, a physician and academic specializing in immunology and a professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine.

Dr. Heber, who is the founding Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles, will be conducting a symposium for free to Filipino medical practitioners on October 23, 9am, at the Manila Hotel. The symposium will gather a group of 100 doctors, nurses, physical therapists and medical practitioners. The title of the symposium is “Obesity: More Than Just Being Overweight and Nutrition Forecast for 2020.” Seminars of Dr. Heber are recognized by US hospitals as part of Continuing Education Studies, which are often required of applicants. The following day, Oct. 24, Dr. Heber will be holding seminars for thousands of Herbalife Independent Members in the same hotel.

This is the first time Dr. Heber, who is also the Chairman of the NAB and the Herbalife Nutrition Institute, to conduct a seminar in Manila since the company was founded in the Philippines 22 years ago.

Reproductive Function and Obesity - The Truth About Body Fat and Male Health #healthZone

Recently, a great deal of attention has been given to the obesity epidemic that is taking its toll on the health of most industrialized countries; at the same time, there has been a push by public service agencies to celebrate people of all sizes and shapes and to promote a healthy body image for all. While their efforts are admirable, and it is true that self-worth should not be rooted in physical appearance, the truth is that being overweight just is not good for the body. The negative health effects of obesity are far-reaching, impacting everything from mental well-being to physical stamina, and even to reproductive function. Men who are overweight are at risk for male health issues, and developing a weight-loss and fitness strategy can be critical to overcoming problems with male organ health.

Here are just a few of the ways that men's reproductive function can be affected by being overweight:

Circulatory issues - good cardiovascular function is critical to male health for a number of reasons. Most obviously, the ability of the heart to pump blood throughout the body has everything to do with the ability of the male organ to fill with blood and become hard; being overweight puts a strain on these systems, meaning it is much more difficult for the male organ to fill with blood.

Diabetes - Type 2 diabetes is a common effect of obesity, and it has multiple effects on many of the systems of the body. Men who are diabetic are at an increased risk for male dysfunction, in part due to its degenerative effects on the nerve tissue that serves the male organ. In essence, obesity can lead to loss of male organ sensation and a corresponding inability to enjoy intimate contact.

Stamina - Men who are carrying too much extra weight may find it difficult to stay the course in bed, often running out of steam before they are able to complete the act.
Hormones - Abdominal fat works to produce the hormone cortisol, a so-called stress hormone. Elevated levels of this chemical can decrease androgen levels, which can in turn decrease a man's drive and ability to respond to sensual stimulation.

Taking steps for better physical and reproductive health

Losing weight is difficult, and it takes time and patience - as well as a lot of effort. But the lasting health benefits are enormous. A commitment to losing weight can make a difference in nearly all aspects of a man's life. Before embarking on a nutritional or exercise program, it is very important to talk to a doctor about any health concerns and about an individual's weight loss goals. Professional advice can help men to avoid missteps that can derail their weight loss efforts and even cause further health problems.

However, the keys to improving health and quality of life include eating foods that are nutritionally sound - in the right proportions - and engaging in regular physical exercise. Many men will find that losing even a few pounds will help them feel more positive mentally, as well as having more physical energy - both important factors in the ability to function in the bedroom.

As part of this program of transformation, a little self-pampering is also warranted; a man who takes extra steps to care for his body will tend to experience greater self-esteem and lower levels of anxiety. Taking time to rest, relax, and care for the body - including the male organ - is a big part of this effort. After a warm bath or shower, applying a male organ health cream (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil) to the manhood can help to improve the overall appearance and feel of the manhood. Vitamins and antioxidants in a specially-formulated male organ cream are designed to stimulate healthy skin and nerve growth, and they can go a long way toward repairing the cellular damage caused by ongoing health issues. Adding a cream like this to the daily personal care regimen is an excellent way to boost male organ health and pave the way to better reproductive function.

Imagine, a family of ten living together with different likes and dislikes...

Usually my wife’s the one in charge of our budget which she always told me, “Dad, it’s very hard to budget nowadays because of the prices are getting higher every day. So, I have to make ends meet every time I went to the supermarket.” I look at her with disgusting stare and said, “Oh come on, same old story. Next time, I’ll accompany you to see the real thing, dare?”

Comes Sunday morning and we both prepare for our “dare to see the real thing.” When we’re inside, the first thing that I notice’s the Swish Mouthwash merchandiser, instantly it catches my senses. I come closer to the shelf and the vividness of the color of the mouthwash’s easily eye-catching. The mouthwash comes in three different flavors with different colors of blue, hot pink, and mint green makes the product line a flashy one.

I pick up the blue one first and read, “Swish Mouthwash Arctic Chill,” which I scrutinize with my telescopic eyes, because the blue flavor appeals to me the most. While holding the Swish Mouthwash Arctic Chill Flavor, I look a little closer to the other two; “Peppermint Green and Mangosteen Mint Flavors.”

In my own knowledge, mouthwash is designed with the intent to freshens breath and eradicate the germs that cause bad breath. And, in my mind, instantly, I’ll switch my brand because I like to try this one.

I get one bottle of Swish Mouthwash Arctic Chill and secretly put at the trolley without my wife’s knowledge. While browsing around the supermarket, I notice some other brands too, but my urges to try Swish Mouthwash prevails, as if, “love at first sight.”

My wife pays the amount at the cashier and notice the bottle of mouthwash which she glance at me in a second and said, “See the real thing huh?” I smile wryly and say, “Yes…yes….”

We go home and I instantly use the Swish Mouthwash Arctic Chill Flavor. It has a sharp minty flavor that kind of tingles at first when swishing it around my mouth. Really I would recommend it to someone that loves the Arctic Chill flavor because not only the taste of icy mint pretty extreme when using the mouthwash, but also for a good few hours after using it.

Also, I recommend to all my family members (with action of course) about it and they say in unison, “How about us Dad?” I look at my wife and she says to them, “We’re on a budget but you’ll see the real thing too, tomorrow, like your father did…..buying his Swish Mouthwash….Arctic Chill Flavor…all of you will have a bottle each. So, select your flavor now; Peppermint Fresh….Mangosteen Mint or Arctic Chill…your father will buy, isn’t it Dad”

“Yes….yes…tomorrow…all of you...”

After buying them 10 bottles of Swish Mouthwash in different flavors, with my curiosity, I open my laptop to search in the internet. There are two sites that I came across, in the Facebook, the Facebook Swish Philippines and the manufacturer, Swish Mouthwash Arctic Chill.

I’ve learned that Swish Mouthwash is a Sure Way to Long Lasting Fresh Breath because Swish has Sure Fresh that helps kill bad breath causing bacteria and prevents plaque build up, gum disease and tooth decay. It is alcohol-free which allows you to gargle for 30 seconds without the painful burning sensation, only leaves you with long lasting minty fresh breath everyday.

Truly, I recommend this Swish Mouthwash to you dear readers....

When Vitamin C levels were restored, the fatty-cholesterol deposits regressed. There have been reports of reversal of fatty-cholesterol deposits in leg arteries after taking Vitamin C in men who were deficient in Vitamin C.

Do vitamins protect against heart disease? Surprisingly, to this date few well-designed studies have been done that will permit any correlation between the intake of vitamins and heart disease. Many claims have been made, especially for Vitamin E, but the data did not withstand scientific scrutiny and was mostly anecdotal. Some observations over 30 years ago have suggested that Vitamin C may be important in preventing fatty-cholesterol deposits in arteries.

Guinea pigs, one of the few laboratory animals that cannot make their own Vitamin C from carbohydrates, developed fatty-cholesterol changes when they were deficient in Vitamin C. They had scurvy.

When Vitamin C levels were restored, the fatty-cholesterol deposits regressed. There have been reports of reversal of fatty-cholesterol deposits in leg arteries after taking Vitamin C in men who were deficient in Vitamin C.

A study from the University of Edinburg, Scotland, (1991) suggests there is, in fact, a linkage between certain vitamins and coronary artery disease. The study was of the blood level of Vitamins A, C and E as well as carotene. It showed that the blood levels of vitamins C and E and carotene were significantly lower in men with angina than in those who did not have angina heart pain. There was no correlation with Vitamin A.

The study was of 100 men who had angina pectoris, and were selected from a special study group of 6,000 men for coronary artery disease. None of these men had seen a doctor for their chest discomfort and were not thought to have influenced their blood levels of vitamins because of changes in their diets. They were compared to 394 men who had no chest pain and served as controls.

One important difference in the two groups was that 29% of the controls and 46% of the men with angina smoked. There were no significant differences in the other usual risk factors for coronary artery disease: total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and blood pressure.

Cigarette smoking did confuse the results. When the influence of cigarette smoking was taken into account, there was no significant difference in carotene levels between the two groups. The difference in Vitamin C levels was significantly decreased. But the difference in Vitamin E levels, as an independent factor, persisted.

That does not mean the differences in levels of carotene and Vitamin C are not important. It may simply mean that one way smoking increases the risk of heart disease is through its effects in lowering the level of carotene and Vitamin C in the body.

On Beta Carotene:

What can you do to use vitamins to help prevent heart disease? Keep in mind that it has not been proven that vitamins prevent coronary artery disease. It is quite important not to think that these studies mean large doses of any of these vitamins or carotene will prevent or treat coronary artery disease. Taking large doses can even be harmful. But the evidence may mean that if you have a low level or deficiency of these vitamins, then you need to improve your nutrition. The same nutritional advice that has been given to prevent heart disease is what you should follow. The antioxidants are found in fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. A great emphasis on these in the diet can help to increase antioxidant vitamins to a normal level.

These crystals are formed within the body because of high levels of uric acid in the blood, which is in turn caused by several factors, which include genetic predisposition, food intake and lifestyle.

Arthritis attacks brought on by gout can vary in intensity, but is often chronic, lasting for days at a time. Without treatment, this can lead to constant pain, and eventually permanent damage that the body cannot recover from.

There are a number of ways to treat gout, though the most common method is to deal with the current arthritis attack. Pain relief is possible through the use of a variety of anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers; should the person with gout choose, there are also more natural methods and gout remedies that can relieve the pain and lessen inflammation.

Whichever specific gout remedy is used to deal with the gouty arthritis, the next step to treatment is to deal with the heightened levels of uric acid. Making sure the levels of uric acid are more normal is vital, in order to prevent future arthritic attacks. Even modern medicine recommends natural methods of doing this, through the use of diet and lifestyle modification to remove sources of uric acid, and encourage more efficient removal of excess uric acid in the blood.

In some cases conventional medicine may prescribe medication to allow the uric acid levels to go down sooner, though this method is only prescribed for more extreme cases. Aside from medication, there are also natural gout remedies that are able to help reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood. These can be used in conjunction with the previously mentioned changes to diet and lifestyle that are recommended to people with gout.

Those with gout may also choose to combine both conventional and alternative natural methods and gout remedies to manage their gout. Generally speaking, natural gout remedies are safe to be combined with conventional medications, though it is still best to get advice from your medical practitioner before doing so.

Are The Eyeglasses Coatings Essential? #HealthZone

As in any other field, the technology of eyeglasses is rapidly advancing today around the world. Since they were first invented, the technology and the types of eyeglasses have changed rapidly according to the requirement of the people. Originally the eyeglasses had glass lenses, but now they have been increasingly replaced with the plastic lenses. In addition to that, you can get various add-on coatings on the eyeglasses, when you would like to buy new pair of eyeglasses. It makes for the confusion in the mind of the consumer.

There are three main types of protective coatings which are available in the market and can be added to any new pair of sunglasses or eyeglasses. Depending upon the distributor, the name of the protecting coatings may differ but essentially they have the quality of anti-scratching protection, UV protection coating and anti-reflective coating. But the question remains, about the meaning of these protective coatings and their importance for the consumers.

Anti-Scratch Coating

The anti-scratch coating which is added to the both sides of the prescribed glasses prevents the scratching on the lenses due to the accidental dropping of the glasses or the scratches which can be caused due to handling of the glasses by the children. Although, no company can manufacture the 100% shatter-proof anti-Scratch Coating, this protective coating saves a fair number of prescribed lenses. This protective coating is recommended for everybody but especially for the patients who have very active children are very clumsy or very active in their lifestyle.

UV Protective Coating

One of the most important add-ons for your eyeglasses, sunglasses or lenses is the UV protective coating. As you apply sunscreen on the beach for the protection from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, you must use the UV protective coating on any type of the eyeglasses for the protection of your eyes. You can face many vision problems like cataracts due to the overexposure to the UV rays of the Sun. It doesn’t matter that where you wear the eyeglasses inside or outside, the UV rays can reach your eyes so you should take care and add UV protective coating to your eyeglasses.

Anti-Reflective Coating

One of the most important additions to your eyeglasses is the anti-reflective coating which is also known as the anti-glare protective coating. This coating helps to you to reduce the volume of reflection which can block the vision of your eyes. This coating helps you to focus while you are driving, working on the computer, watching television and reading on the kindle etc. The protective coating contains the extremely thin addition which is multi-layered which eliminates all the reflections and the glare going out and coming in from the eyeglasses. By reducing the reflections and the glare, the anti-reflective coating protects your eyes and vision from continued stress.

As we have seen above, these types of the protective coatings are important for the protection of your eyes and vision health in different but important ways. The cost of adding these protective coatings may be a little expensive but it is worth saving your eyes and vision.

Vitamins Versus Heart Disease

The same nutritional advice that has been given to revent heart disease is what you should follow. The antioxidants are found in fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. A great emphasis on these in the diet can help to increase antioxidant vitamins to a normal level.
